How to Register for Corporate Tax on EmaraTax: Step-by-Step
-
Everyone in scope must register, including businesses that will pay zero: Small Business Relief electors, 0% free zone companies, and loss-makers. Registration and taxation are separate questions.
-
Deadlines: new companies within 3 months of incorporation; individuals whose business turnover crossed AED 1 million register by 31 March of the following year; existing companies' licence-month deadlines have already passed.
-
The corporate tax TRN is separate from your VAT TRN. Having one does not mean you have the other, and the AED 10,000 late-registration penalty applies per person, per regime.
EmaraTax registration is a 30 to 45 minute online process once documents are ready. The expensive part is not doing it. Here is the complete walkthrough.
First: confirm you're in scope and find your deadline
In scope: UAE companies (mainland and free zone, worldwide income), foreign companies with a UAE permanent establishment, and natural persons whose UAE business turnover exceeded AED 1 million in a calendar year (the freelancer rules). Deadlines by type:
| Who | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Company incorporated before March 2024 | Staggered by trade-licence month (all passed; register immediately if missed) |
| Company incorporated after 1 March 2024 | Within 3 months of incorporation |
| Natural person crossing AED 1M turnover | 31 March of the following calendar year |
Missing the deadline costs AED 10,000, but a standing FTA waiver applies if you file your first return within seven months of your first tax period's end; the mechanics are in penalties and deadlines. If you're late, registering now plus filing on time is the repair path.
Documents to prepare
Companies: trade licence(s), memorandum/articles of association, Emirates ID and passport of the authorised signatory, proof of authorisation (POA/board resolution if not the owner), business contact details and address, and financial year details. Natural persons: Emirates ID, passport, trade licence or permit if held, and turnover evidence. Scans should be current and legible; mismatched names between licence and ID documents are the most common rejection cause.
The EmaraTax flow, step by step
-
Create or log in to your EmaraTax account (tax.gov.ae) using UAE PASS or email credentials. Existing VAT registrants use the same login; the corporate tax registration is a new, separate application inside it.
-
Create the taxable person profile. Companies register as a juridical person; freelancers/sole proprietors as a natural person. One natural person registers once, covering all their business activities combined.
-
Select "Register for Corporate Tax" and complete the sections: entity details, identification (licence details, activities), ownership (shareholders above thresholds), contact details, and the authorised signatory.
-
Declare your financial year / tax period. Companies follow their financial year; natural persons use the calendar year. This choice drives every future deadline: return due nine months after period end.
-
Review and submit. The FTA typically processes within about 20 business days, with queries returned through the portal; respond promptly, since the clock and the deadline don't pause.
-
Receive your Corporate Tax TRN. Save the certificate; banks, auditors, and government processes will ask for it.
After registration: the obligations that start immediately
Registration is the beginning of a cycle, not a task completed. From here: maintain records (seven-year retention), prepare financial statements appropriate to your size (audited if revenue is AED 50 million+ or you claim QFZP status), file the return within nine months of each period end, and pay by the same date. If your revenue is AED 3 million or under, the single most valuable post-registration step through 2026 is checking and making the Small Business Relief election on your return: Small Business Relief, and the quick check via the Small Business Relief Checker.
Three recurring mistakes
-
"I have a TRN" (from VAT). Different regime, different registration; verify inside EmaraTax which registrations your profile actually holds. The systems' relationship is explained in VAT for individuals and small businesses.
-
"My free zone company is 0%, so no registration." QFZP status is a rate, not an exemption from registration and filing; skipping either forfeits the status and triggers penalties.
-
"I'll register when I owe something." The obligation attaches on scope, not on liability, and the AED 10,000 penalty is indifferent to your eventual zero. The full 0%/9% structure frequently means registered-but-owing-nothing, which is the system working as designed.
