Travel Insurance and Other Optional Cover in the UAE: What's Worth It
-
The filter for every optional policy: insure what you couldn't afford to replace, skip what you could. Catastrophic and expensive risks (foreign medical bills, your home's contents, your income) justify premiums; inconveniences (a phone screen, a delayed bag) usually don't.
-
Worth it for most people: travel medical cover when abroad, home contents insurance (AED 300 to 800/year, chronically under-bought by renters), and confirming your ILOE unemployment enrolment (mandatory, AED 60 to 120/year, fines if missed).
-
Usually poor value: gadget insurance, retailer extended warranties, and relying on credit-card travel cover without reading its limits.
The UAE insurance market sells protection for everything. Most of it prices anxiety, not risk. Here is each common optional cover, judged by the only test that matters: expected loss versus premium, weighted by whether you could absorb the loss.
Travel insurance: yes, for the medical line
The reason to buy is one line item: emergency medical treatment abroad. A hospitalisation in the US, an evacuation from a hiking trip, or even a European emergency room without an EHIC-equivalent can run into six or seven figures of dirhams; premiums are AED 50 to 300 per trip. Schengen visa applicants must carry it anyway (EUR 30,000 minimum medical cover is a visa condition). Buy for: medical limits of USD 100,000+, evacuation/repatriation, and personal liability. Treat as bonuses, not reasons: baggage, delay, and cancellation lines, which have low caps and busy exclusions.
Two UAE-specific notes: your UAE health policy may include some regional or worldwide emergency cover at higher tiers, so check before double-buying, and annual multi-trip policies beat per-trip pricing at around three or more trips a year.
Credit-card travel cover: read before relying
Premium cards often include travel insurance if the trip was paid with the card. The cover is real but the limits and conditions matter: medical caps sometimes far below standalone policies, family members covered only in narrow definitions, and claim processes routed through the card's insurer. Fine for a weekend in Georgia; verify before it's your only cover for a US trip with kids.
Home contents: the best-value policy nobody buys
Renters insure nothing while sitting on AED 100,000+ of electronics, furniture, jewellery and clothes; the landlord's building policy covers the structure, not your things. Contents cover runs roughly AED 300 to 800/year, typically including fire, theft, water damage (a chronically relevant peril in apartment towers) and often personal liability and alternative accommodation. After the region's recent flood events, check natural perils are included rather than assumed. This is the highest cover-per-dirham product on this page; your deposit and your rights as a tenant are separate protections covered in tenant rights in the UAE.
ILOE: not optional, so check it
The federal Involuntary Loss of Employment scheme is mandatory for most employees (AED 60/year for salaries up to AED 16,000; AED 120 above), pays up to 60% of salary for up to three months of involuntary job loss, and fines apply for non-subscription. It's cheap because it's pooled; the action item is simply confirming you're enrolled and renewed at iloe.ae, since the fine exceeds years of premiums.
Usually skip
Gadget insurance: premiums plus excess routinely approach the repair cost; you can absorb a screen. Extended warranties at the till: high-margin products duplicating statutory and manufacturer cover for failure windows that rarely materialise. Small personal-accident add-ons sold with everything from cards to car policies: overlapping fragments that a properly sized term life policy replaces coherently. Rental-car excess sold at the desk: standalone excess policies bought online cost a fraction, if you rent often.
The portfolio view
Optional covers compete with your core stack: health tier, life cover sized to dependants, motor, and for owners, the mortgage-linked policies. The right sequence funds the catastrophic covers fully before spending a dirham on convenience covers. Run your whole stack through the free Insurance Needs Estimator to see the gaps and the overlaps in one view; most people find one of each.
