What Motorola Solutions reported
| Metric | This period | A year earlier | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales | $3,376M | $3,009M | +12% |
| Non-GAAP EPS | $4.69 | $4.06 | +16% |
| GAAP EPS | $3.06 | $3.33 | -8% |

EPS is earnings per share. The non-GAAP version leaves out items such as share-based pay and amortisation from acquisitions. A basis point (bps) is one hundredth of a percentage point. Acquisitions added $211 million of revenue. GAAP profit fell mainly because of a larger contingent earnout payment for the Silvus acquisition, and free cash flow fell on higher tax and interest payments.
Full-year revenue guidance, the company's own forecast, rose to about $13.050 billion from $12.975 billion. Non-GAAP EPS guidance moved to $17.94 to $17.99, up from $17.62 to $17.72, and expected operating cash flow rose to $3.050 billion. For the fourth quarter, the company expects revenue growth of about 13% and non-GAAP EPS of $5.47 to $5.52.
Why the stock rose 9.0%
The gain was about six times the size of a typical day's swing for this stock, a rare move for a company worth roughly $74 billion. Two details stood out. This was the second time this year the company had lifted its revenue and earnings outlook. Ending backlog, meaning signed orders not yet booked as sales, reached a record $16.6 billion, up 14%, on record third-quarter orders across mission-critical networks, video and command center software.
