STRA Stock Falls 8.4% on $134M Impairment, Q3 Net Loss
Strategic Education stock fell 8.4% on November 5, 2026 after a $134.1 million impairment pushed it to a third-quarter net loss of $98.3 million.
Strategic Education (NASDAQ: STRA) shares were down 8.44% in regular trading on November 5, 2026, after the company reported third-quarter 2026 results that morning. The quarter included a $134.1 million non-cash impairment charge, an accounting write-down of what its Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) business, mainly Torrens University, is worth on the books. No cash left the company.
What Strategic Education reported
| Metric | This period | A year earlier | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $325.1 million | $319.9 million | +1.6% |
| Income (loss) from operations | -$87.6 million | $37.0 million | Swung to loss |
| Net income (loss) | -$98.3 million | $26.6 million | Swung to loss |
| Diluted earnings (loss) per share | -$4.68 | $1.15 | Swung to loss |
| Adjusted diluted EPS, constant currency | $1.69 | $1.63 | +3.7% |
Adjusted EPS strips out one-off items such as the impairment, and constant currency removes exchange-rate effects. The company said "persistent international student immigration constraints" led it to reassess near-term growth expectations for ANZ. ANZ enrollment fell 9.1% to 17,101 students, and its revenue in constant currency fell 7.2% to $63.6 million.
The smaller Education Technology Services segment grew revenue 11.9% to $42.8 million. In U.S. Higher Education, enrollment slipped 1.1% to 84,725 students, while revenue edged up 0.3% to $213.7 million.
Why the stock fell 8.4%
The drop was about four times the size of a typical day's swing for the stock. The headline loss was driven by the write-down, and the reason given, a lower growth outlook for ANZ, points to weaker expectations for that business rather than a one-time accounting tidy-up. Underlying growth was also thin. Excluding currency effects, revenue rose just 0.1% to $320.1 million, and adjusted operating margin slipped to 15.7% from 16.0%.
