01How this market works

Before you shortlist.

A co-branded card is a bank card wearing a retailer's colours: supermarket chains, malls, delivery apps and other loyalty ecosystems. The design trade-off is consistent across the category: an outsized earn rate at the partner's own tills, and a thin base rate everywhere else. That makes the evaluation unusually personal: the same card can be the best-value product in the market for a household that does its weekly shop at the partner, and mediocre for everyone else. Be honest about how much of your monthly spend the partner really captures.

Redemption is the second half of the deal. Points usually live in the partner's loyalty scheme and are redeemed at the partner (often instantly at the till, which is genuinely convenient), but that also means the value is locked to one ecosystem, and a devaluation of the scheme devalues your balance with it. Check the published conversion (what a point is worth in dirhams), any monthly earning caps, and the reduced-rate category lists, which follow the same everyday-essentials pattern as the rest of the market.

The economics of the category are friendly: 16 of the 31 cards publish an AED 0 annual fee, and published minimum salaries start at AED 5,000. A common pattern that works well is pairing a free co-branded card, used only where its rate is unbeatable, with a general cashback or rewards card for everything else.

04Selection criteria

How to choose.

  • Estimate the share of your monthly spend the partner brand actually captures; below a meaningful share, a general cashback card wins.
  • Value the points in dirhams using the published conversion rate, and check how and where they can be redeemed.
  • Look for monthly caps on the boosted partner rate and for minimum-spend conditions attached to it.
  • Check the base rate on non-partner spend; if you would use the card everywhere, that thin rate is what most of your dirhams earn.
  • Prefer the AED 0 versions unless a paid tier's extra perks clear the same fee-versus-benefit test as any premium card.
