01How this market works

Before you shortlist.

Everyday cards are the market's plain instruments: modest or no annual fee, simple or minimal rewards, and standard payment features. That simplicity is the point. If this is your first card in the UAE, it is also how you start an AECB credit file, the record that later prices your car loan and mortgage, and the mechanics that build it are boring on purpose: keep utilisation well below the limit, never miss a payment date, and let the account age. 9 of the 21 cards here publish an AED 0 annual fee, so establishing history does not have to cost anything.

A cheap card is only cheap if it stays out of interest. Monthly rates in this category sit in the same 3%-plus band as everywhere else, roughly 44% or more as an effective annual rate, and the minimum payment is designed to keep a balance alive for years. Watch the add-ons with the same eye: easy-payment plans, cash advances and balance transfers each carry their own fees and rates, and they are where a simple card quietly stops being simple.

Entry starts at a published minimum salary of AED 5,000, and where salary-transfer terms are published, most cards in the catalogue do not require moving your salary to the issuing bank; that is worth checking card by card, because keeping your salary account independent preserves your flexibility to change banks later.

04Selection criteria

How to choose.

  • Start from the fee note, not the perks: free-for-life beats first-year-free, and both beat a waiver tied to spend you would not otherwise do.
  • Prefer a card with no salary-transfer requirement unless the bank pays you meaningfully for the switch.
  • Check the monthly rate even if you never plan to borrow; plans change, and this category shows real spread between issuers.
  • If a simple card offers light rewards, treat them as a tiebreaker only; a fee-free card you keep for years is the goal.
  • Ask for a limit you can comfortably manage: lower utilisation is better for your AECB score than a big unused limit is for your ego.

Educational tool only: not financial advice and not a recommendation of any card. Figures reflect Himma's card catalogue as of July 2026. Banks reprice frequently and individual offers vary by credit profile. Always verify current terms in the bank's Key Fact Statement and schedule of charges, and consult the Central Bank of the UAE's consumer-protection resources before borrowing.
